I often see the words ';rant'; and ';rave'; together. What is the distinction between the two words?

I looked in the dictionary and they seem to have very similar definitions. I often see the words ';rant'; and ';rave'; together. What is the distinction between the two words?
If I were to use them separately, I would tend to think that ';rant'; has more of a negative connotation (like venting or complaining), while rave would be more positive (ie. rave reviews, was raving about something, etc.).

Rave has a more physical connotation, but rant is strictly verbal. Also like ';stark raving mad'; the visual for this is a person who is not only non-senscal in verbiage but also in behavior.

I love the jonas brothers, and I wouldn't mind the haters if they didn't do what they do! If they would just back off and leave us alone, then I wouldn't care about all the haters! We don't go to any band they like and talk trash about them 24/7!

People dont give the true fans as much credit as they should some of us dont like them just because there ';hawt'; and the true fans love ALL of them not just two out of three. I have no problem with people that dislike them it just bothers me when people say they ';hate'; them because there isnt any reason to hate. I had 800 friends. (not fake friends, 600 of them were my actual friends and family) i mean i dont need myspace, but i do need all that was on there. there were pics on there that i dont have anywhere else. You're right. Pretentious is a vague word that took years to really understand. In fact, many people who use the word pretentious are just being pretentious.





I always think of pretentiousness as doing or saying something more for the effect of how you will appear to others than for the whatever the obvious effect of your words or actions should be. People usually do it to sound smart.





For example, people are often pretentious when they use difficult, obscure words. If I said, ';I especially liked the dichotomy between beginning and the end'; just for the sake of sounding smart by using a big word like dichotomy, I would be pretentious. It makes me feel better about myself to unnecessarily (though correctly) use the word and might impress the less-educated around me.





People often speak in a pretentious manner by using unnecessarily difficult, formal, and often out of date language.
As you say it's entirely dependant on circumstances.


To me pretentiousness involves the pursuit of something purely to impress others.


For example it would not be pretentious for someone to learn French and read a French newspaper, even in public, simply for the love of the language or of French culture.

If you are trying to answer a call waiting call then you press the call button (its usually the green phone button).





If you are trying to perform a three way call you make the first call. Once you are on the first call, press the call button, dial the second number and press the call button again. With some phones you will need to press the call button a third time to connect the first call to the second call.

I just got my new phone. I don't use sound for my text messages ever. Every phone I have ever had gave me and option to have my text messages vibrate. I can't find this option on my Rant. I just recently got a samsung rant cell phone. I've looked everywhere but i cant seem a to find a cover/case with a cute design. I like the ones at the mall but when i went there about a week ago they hadn't come in with any yet. I have also checked ebay and online. Maybe i have missed something. I too have been looking for a faceplate cover for my rant. The only thing I have found with a pattern or design is on the Sprint website. You can create a skin with a program called skinit. This allows you to crate a ';skin'; with anything from your favorite sports team to a picture you can upload from your own computer. I do not know the cost or even if they work because I have not ordered one. They are, however, 25% off right now with the promo code HOLIDAY25. Well, did anyone ever stop to consider that maybe some people are tired of being told that they are ';in denial, in a fog, or not bright enough'; because their opinions differ from the majority, might get angry about that?





It's something I've never understood. There are posters here who are very adament that if an adoptee expresses that they haven't felt a ';primal wound'; or experienced rejection or loss as a result of their adoption that they are just that: ';in a fog, in denial or not bright';.





So when those adoptees finally say, ';Hey, I have a right to be happy and don't need permission from you to do so!'; then the response is ';Well if you were so happy, you wouldn't need to shout about it.';





Makes no sense to me. And no, I don't think that ranting always means that someone is hurting or in pain. Some people rant because they are angry. Some people rant because they like to rant.Why is it more accepted to rant about negative adoption issues but not positive adoption issues?

ETA: OK, I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and assume you are wondering if it is more accepted to play up all of the negatives about adoption than to play up the positives of adoption on yahoo answers.





I'm thinking it appears this way because more often than not the people who DO have issues with adoption (be it their own adoption, adoption in general, or the adoption agencies) are the ones who seek out websites like this. Though I'm on the other side of the fence (i'm fine with my adoption and adoption in general (if it is ethical) though I don't like what some of the agencies do), I can imagine there are many people out there like me who just plain don't think to seek out an adoption website because they have nothing triggering them to think about it.





Bottom line: I don't think it is that it is ';more accepted.'; I think that it just so happens that there are more people who have problems with adoption that are here looking for support or to provide advice (which is fine) than there are people with fewer problems with adoption.
Hmmm . . . my guess is because those who speak out about the other truths of adoption are not willing to let themselves be silenced any longer by being labeled with such things as negative, bitter, angry etc . . .





Because the ';roses and sunshine'; version is what the majority knows and there are people brave enough and strong enough to continue to counter that even with the many who want to discredit what they have to say.





And because, maybe, you are seeing it wrong. It isn't that it is more ';accepted'; but that more and more people are speaking out about the desperate need for adoption reform and the collection of these strong voices are gaining force and not backing down and finally being heard and joined by others who listen and learn, and add their strong voices to the same beliefs.
I don't see it as ranting. I see it as getting the other side of adoption out. If you had the textbook adoption with NO issues, that's really great, at least some adoptions worked the way the agencies say they do. But there is also a lot of loss and pain associated with adoption and lots of people feel it. That's what is not being told by agencies. It's always about how wonderful the children are going to do with new parents and how the surrendering parents are going to get over it. It's not ALWAYS the truth. And most labeled adoptees and mothers just want the truth to be told.





Its okay to tell happy stories, just make sure their the truth.
I have come to the realization that people that actually have positive adoption issues, are either called ';liars'; or ';people in denial';, at least I have been. So it is safer for the ones that are negative to post, because they will have more people to will understand. I am still going to stay here no matter if I am in the minority here. Misery does love company. I am one of the rare ones here, but I do feel that positive people should be able to share as well.
I read both anyway. Negative or positive. I don't mind learning why people feel as they do about any topic. I try to read between the lines at times, since there are always layers to emotions. Everyone needs to vent once in a while. Some personalities bottle it up, and then its easier to rant in written form than verbal.





But we can't thrive on constaent negative imput, and its not always helpful if its all negative, if its all bad and nothing good. You learn from positive experiences just as much. In the positives you learn what people did RIGHT. rather than constantly focusing on the mistakes, and problems. Sure these things do need to be heard, just in this day and age its people think needs to be heard.





So I'm open to both sides and it would be a shame if people witb positives stopped posting answers because they didn't feel heard or respected.





I've seen the results of change because the negative side has been heard, its when they become blinded by their experiences and refuse to acknowledge the changes that annoy me. Australia, Family preservation policy, open adoption records etc in almost all states. And yet people are starting to see that adoption is still needed, kids still want to feel part of the family not on the outside of it and not just be in fostering for 18yrs of their life and hope they have a family at the end. I have my gripes about a person who wants to see their kid every fortnight but refuses to raise them themselves or get their act together and treat a foster parent as a baby sitter. Or just leaves them in system and vanishes, but wants to 'claim' them as their child when they turn 18. See how easy it is to rant! LOL
Well, it's the negative parts of adoption that NEED attention so it will stop .





I do think ranting is a sign of pain, but can you blame anyone from ranting about their pain.





Something I do see that is lacking around here, is support for the things that done right. A person can come her for advice about all the things he/she is doing right but us a term that some don't like here and THAT becomes the topic, not what the person actually came here for.

If you mean actual literal ranting instead of just asking questions or posting opinions, I think it's because we understand that a person who feels the need to rant to strangers is probably coming from a place of pain-- and pain is from negative experiences, not positive ones.





I know I personally give a lot more leeway to someone lashing out because they're hurting, than just trying to cram their opinions down my throat while they're emotionally fine. It's a context thing, really.





Someone with a negative experience may need to let it out (even though it would be better to do it in less accusatory or insulting ways, sometimes it's just too raw to bother trying to be socially acceptable,) whereas someone with a positive experience doesn't really have an excuse for being nasty.
well, from my experience, my parents were told only the positives and very little truth about adoption and what it can do, even though there had been numerous studies done by then. it was accepted that the baby would just fit nicely into their lives and grow up happy and fine with a secure home. so they were not prepared for any of the **** that went with me and my sister growing up, they did not know how to handle it and i half resent them now for not attempting to understand us more. so maybe its a need for the world to actually know that adoption isnt happy and rosy as the social workers years ago may have made it out to be. i used to rant, basically cos i had a strong opinion. i dont think i insulted people, but i did have a lot of tings to say that id neve said before, it is a release!
I think you're pretty much on target with ';misery loves company';. Most, not ALL, but most people on here are here because they hate adoption. Mostly birth mothers who regretted relinquishing, but waited until it was too late. There are exceptions. I came here looking for information about adopting when I thought I couldn't have kids. Now that I know I can, I still stick around because people were so nasty to me and perspective adoptive parents need all the people in their corner they can get
If you find an answer please share it with me. I've been happy in my adoption since day one and the only flack I've ever gotten for it has been here. Adoption is not perfect, that much I readily admit, but it certainly isn't the living he-ll for everyone that some around here insist it is.
If you don't want to hear the truth about the experiences of others, then why do you put out a question that people, all people, can answer? Seems to me that is begging for a rant. When does positive adoption become an ';issue';? Why don't you ask who has had a positive adoption? When you do that you will have your answer. Either is accepted, just the right question needs to be asked.
I don't think that ranting on any side of the issue or other wise is good at all. Seems like you might be trying to stir up some ranting? Adoption is a very emotional issue, everyone's experience is their own.

sprint does not allow you to use mp3 files in the memory card as ringtones. they block that. the only way is to follow the above tutorial from ventones and convert the mp3 files to a video file. then transfer that to your memory card.

It could be schizophrenia. Does this person have any history of it in their fanily as there is thought to be a genetic link (if a parent has it they are 50% more liekly to be a sufferer.)





The lack of coherant speech is an indicator of schizophrenia as is the lack of apparent stimuli causing outbursts and the other symptoms you described.





Scizophrenia often develops in your 20's although can happen at any stage in life and may be triggered by stressful life events.





This can be treated effectively with ssri's so get them to a doctor!

You might try a blow drier on the motherboard, but I would say that its fried. There is a water damage sensor, and they usually don't repair water damage very cheap, and you cant tell them it just broke of its own accord. You will more than likley have to just get a new one. sorry!

Many people do not have the education to effect changes in their own existence let alone in society in general, so feel powerless and ineffectual in the face of what appear to be major forces at work around them.





They are conditioned by society, via the media, to feel that they 'deserve' certain inalienable rights, such as a large television, the right to walk around at night without molestation in the cities, four weeks paid holidays a year, good food, health care and respect for their views no matter how different from the mainstream.





They feel that if they are not getting what is 'their right' then someone somewhere is denying them deliberately and this is part of some conspiracy against the lower paid or working class.





Other people just get on with their lives, being honest hardworking and taking pleasure in what they have and do and the people in their lives.





This second class of people may be wealthy or poor, it's a state of mind, not bank balance. The whingers may be wealthy as well but due to internal problems sublimate their personal shortcomings onto society as a whole. They believe that 'if only - kids were more respectful, the government tackled law and order, taxes were lower, schools were better, etc, etc,' they would be 'happy'.





It's all people, it's all in their heads, it's just life.

most people are ranting about problems without offering solutions because they are scared right now as they watch the news and look at national level problems reported in the worst possible light to create high ratings for the networks. high single digit unemployment rates could be reported as over 90 percent are still working. also most people fail to realize that they can be more effective if they leave the big issues and government solutions alone. and fix one thing for themselves or someone locally, if more people took on a small Challenge and handled it it would add up to big solutions when the results are viewed nationally
Nobody has taught them how to make a difference. Most people have never heard of a precinct committeeman, and if they have, they have no idea they can become one.





People are indoctrinated (by schools, in my opinion) that voting every 2 years is enough. Civic participation is dead, simply because nobody knows how to do it.





We are no longer a government by, of, and for the people. -_-
They don't study philosophies and the history of their application; so they don't have any idea what to do. They just know they don't like what's happening.





Sadly Jefferson's warning was accurate. We brought in heavy industry and hordes of people, dependent on a wage and conditioned to taking direction, followed. He said those were not capable of governing themselves.





So, here we are.
It's just freedom of expression and of speech. There are some people that don't quite have the means or tools on how to reach their government officials, therefore they have no other choice but to rant and rave. And offering a solution..well..do you have any? if so then i'm on board with you.
Because they don't know any better. Few people actually know whats going on. Its not because they are stupid or anything but more of lazy or just plain uninterested. Most people just watch a bit of TV every morning and think that they know something about politics. Very few people actually bother to take the time out of their day to look up whats going on.

However, she said the desperation also translates into fighter power and will win her the nomination. Well, I know it is easy to get wound up by trolls who are voting against Obama for reasons that amount to race, but I think Obama fans shouldn't forget that Hillary's REAL supporters are Dems at the end of the day and we should be sensitive to them --- especially to older female Hillary fans. You have to remember that since women's lib, feminists have been equal partners with the African American crowd in pushing Dem values.





Hillary is honestly the last chance for a first gen Women's lib feminist to win the nomination. Future female candidates will be second generation and that is why a lot of older female Hillary fans might be fighting so hard for her. Hillary, the concept, is their dream, regardless of whether Hillary the person is.

How do I make my Sprint Rant pictures normal?

I just got the Sprint Rant today, and it works great.


I just switched to Sprint, so I'm really not used to the settings of the phone and stuff yet. When I first took a picture it was fine. The next time I tried to take pictures, was in my room, and every picture is turning out green. I checked to make sure if the setting of the colorness was normal, and it was. Then When I tried to change it to a different setting, it wouldn't change, It would just stay green. Any ideas of whats wrong? Is it just the lighting of my room.. ?How do I make my Sprint Rant pictures normal?
my chocolate did the same thing a while ago (i dont know why it stopped) but try resetting the camera like press end a whole bunch then press the camera key again.. keep trying this over and over and if that doesnt work then turn your phone off and turn it on again and retry.. if no luck then take it back into sprint, and if you are still within the 30 day limit.. or you have insurance, then you should be able to get a new phone for free (the same one).. as long as you dont have water damage.. good luck

I';d say men are 100% illogical who rant about women taking money from men; why do they give money to women if they hate it so much? Further, why are the ones who give money away to women whining in this forum about it; I wouldn't take money from one of those guys if my life depended on it. I'd rather starve.
Agreed...I also agree that women who are attracted to a man's money have no room to whine when men dangle money to attract them and then dump them when they are done playing...
