Can someone please tell me the difference between a rant and an essay?

I've already checked several sources including WikipediA.

Everything that I've read seems to say that they are one in the same.

Please help, I'm away at school %26amp; Mom's not answering her phone.

Please help. We got this assignment this morning and it's due Friday morning.Can someone please tell me the difference between a rant and an essay?
Ok, a rant goes on and on, rambling. It is often angry and not level headed. Think of a rant as ';fuming'; or ';venting frustration'; that should help. Your essay should be clear, provide good evidence in an oderly manor, and make sense. It should try to prove your point to the reader. A rant just sort of talks about your point.Can someone please tell me the difference between a rant and an essay?
This is just from my general knowledge rather than from any scholarly source, but I would say that a rant tends to wander from topic to topic; it is not organized and does not proceed in a logical fashion. An essay is a well-thought-out statement, starting from a general statement and proceeding with a logical argument and relevant illustrations or examples in its support.
I would posit that a 'rant' has more emotional content. An essay could be objective and a rant should be subjective.

Usually to rant about something is to go on and on and even lose some of your rationality. ';The man ranted on and on about the light not changing to green - well, he was rather tipsy, so I suppose I should not have been surprised!';

Go for it and -= well look up rant online in a dictionary. I am just 'top of my heading it!'
Did you check with ';Frankly';?

Call Auntie Lisa.

She always on some sort of a rant.

Grocery Store, Inquiring minds want to know.
Viewpoint of the reader, if I agree it's a essay if I disagree it's a rant.
