It's never really explained. I think you're supposed to get the idea that he was lucky the first time a spider bit him, and after that he kinda built up a tolerance for it...

It's been a while since I've read the book and I just picked it up around the middle, where I left off. I forgot how he survives the venom and poison bites but I don't really want to go back and read it all again just for that.How does Rant(Buster Casey) survive the poison bites?
