I've always heard the word ';pretentious'; used very vaguely. I know how to use it from both conversation and definition. I've always had trouble recognizing pretentiousness or being able to apply the word because of the fact that it is so circumstantial. I would love to hear your experiences and examples. Maybe a list of behaviour or instances that could scream ';pretentious';.Open rant: Describe someone pretentious or a pretentious act of someone you know. What allows it?
When I was in college, one of my friends worked in the one professor's office kind of as the receptionist. One day the professor asked not to be disturbed, as he was working on some important project. Another professor came in to see him, and my friend began to tell her that the professor didn't want ot be disturbed. Well, this professor said, ';I am here to see Professor Smith, and I am going to see him,'; and stormed right into his office.
And from my own experience, when I was waitressing in a tearoom, well, I had a lot of pretentious/rude people, but this one took the cake. A customer had asked me for a pot of hot tea with a glass of ice to make her own iced tea. Well, there were a lot of people at that table, so when I brought the drinks, I didn't have room on my tray for her glass of ice. This woman loudly announced that her instructions had not been followed and that I was obviously not smart enough to understand her request. It took everything in me not to pour her hot tea down her blouse.
Hope that;s what you're looking for. :)Open rant: Describe someone pretentious or a pretentious act of someone you know. What allows it?
I consider Barack Obama pretentious. He believes he is qualified to be Presisdent, but as a citizen of Illinois that voted for him for the Senate, I can't think of a thing he has done for the state.
I have no idea what he believes qualifies him other than the facts that he is a US born citizen and meets the age requirement.
Just my 2 cents
